That makes what five members of Team Nationwide accomplished last week at TPC Sawgrass even more impressive. Five Team Nationwide players made the cut, with Jeff Quinney finishing tied for sixth and Brandt Snedeker tying for 12th place. Cliff Kresge wound up in a tie for 28th, while Ken Duke tied for 38th place and Boo Weekley tied for 44th. Quinney's tie for sixth at TPC Sawgrass boosted him up to 21st place in the FedExCup points standings, a rise of 10 spots from his previous position, and his finish could have been even better but for a final-round stumble. Quinney opened his week with rounds of 71 and 74, and a stellar 64 on Saturday put him in prime position. He stumbled out of the gate Sunday with three bogeys in his first eight holes, then righted his ship with a pair of back-nine birdies. His fifal-round 73 left him at 6-under 282, five shots behind winner Phil Mickelson. Snedeker's week followed a similar course. He opened with rounds of 72 and 74, improved his standing with a Saturday 68, and then finished up with a 70. He ended up at 4-under 284, and climbed up to 46th in the FedExCup standings. Kresge was reading from the same script, beginning his week with a pair of 72s before adding a 68 on Saturday. But three bogeys in his first five holes on Sunday sent him on his way to a closing 74 and a 1-under 287 total. He stands 74th on the FedExCup list. By contrast, Duke opened with a 76 but improved his scores the rest of the week. He bounced back with a second-round 72 and followed up with a pair of 70s on the weekend to finish at even-par 288 and is 22nd in the FedExCup standings. Duke did make some history, though, as his eagle at the arduous par-4 14th on Sunday was only the third in tournament history on that hole and the first since Corey Pavin recorded one in the first round in 1994. Duke used a 9-iron from 159 yards. Weekley, still fresh off his Verizon Heritage victory a month ago, started his week at Sawgrass with a 74, then carded a 73 and a pair of weekend 71s to finish at 1-over 289. In large part because of his Verizon victory, he remains the Team Nationwide member highest on the FedExCup points list, as he currently occupies 11th place. |
