Players will be in position at 7:45 a.m. Friday to complete round one. In the meantime, round two will begin on time at 7:30 a.m. ![]() Eric Axley will enjoy a free Chrysler Sebring convertible, which he won by acing the 17th hole. (Feldman/WireImage) Eric Axley recorded a hole-in-one at the 218-yard, par-3 17th hole today. Axley used a 4-iron to make his ace, which also netted him a 2008 Chrysler Sebring convertible. The 17th hole is the only par-3 hole this week where the car is available to be won. Axley shot a 4-over-par 77. Craig Kanada took the morning clubhouse lead with a 6-under-par 67 that included a bogey on his final hole. Kanada came into this week ranked No. 127 on the money list after missing the cut in his last five starts. The former Ohio State University standout has struggled since he tied for 12th at the AT&T National in early July, which moved him up to No. 94 on the money list. Kanada has missed the cut in 9 of his 12 starts since then, with his best showing in that period he tied for 33rd at the Wyndham Championship. Bob Estes (No. 118 on the money list) ran off six consecutive birdies on holes 1-6 today. The six in a row matches the second-best streak on the 2007 PGA TOUR. Mark Wilson had seven in a row at the Memorial Tournament. Anthony Kim (round 1) and David Toms (round 4) each had six straight at the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial and Jeff Maggert (round 3) also had six in a row at the Wyndham Championship. Bob Estes' six-consecutive-birdie performance was one off his career-best. Estes had seven straight birdies to close out his second round at the 2004 FedEx St. Jude Classic. In that round, Estes made the turn and went bogey-double bogey-birdie-birdie-birdie-birdie-birdie-birdie-birdie for a round of 64. Bob Estes' 9-under-par score today is his second-best opening round in relation to par. Estes' career-best first-round score was a 10-under-par 61 at the 2001 FedEx St. Jude Classic, which he won. He also shot a 9-under 62 to open the 1994 Texas Open, which he also won. Those victories represent half of his four career wins on TOUR. He has been the leader/co-leader after the first round seven times previously in his career. Tommy Armour III (No. 113 on the money list) tied Bob Estes for the lead at 9-under 64 thanks to birdies on his final three holes. In relation to par, this is Armour's career-best first round. Previously, he shot an 8-under 63 in the first round of the 2002 Greater Milwaukee Open. With only two weeks to go in the 2007 PGA TOUR schedule, a great deal of attention falls on the top-125 on the money list. Here is a list of the "bubble boys" and how they're faring this week, along with some others who are facing some critical final weeks:
Bob Tway birdied his first four holes this afternoon (Nos. 10-13). Andrew Buckle, Craig Lile and Carl Pettersson each birdied their first three holes today (Nos. 1-3). Michael Putnam (68) closed out his back nine eagle-birdie-birdie to make the turn in 4-under par. Bob Estes also birdied Nos. 1-2-3-4-5-6 as he made the turn. Craig Kanada birdied Nos. 1-2-3 as well. Kevin Na (68) holed out a wedge from 100 yards for an eagle-2 on his opening hole this morning. Chris Tidland had the rarest of beginnings today with an eagle-eagle start. Tidland holed his second shot on the par-4 1st from 72 yards out. He then rolled in an eagle putt of 14 feet, 10 inches on the 536-yard, par-5, 2nd hole. TIdland is the fifth player to make back-to-back eagles in 2007. Will MacKenzie (79) withdrew after the first round. |
