Notes from the Champions Tour

Jun. 12, 2007

  • Allen Doyle made his U.S. Open debut in 1991 when, as an amateur, he missed the cut at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Minnesota. Fifteen years later, Doyle was back playing in the U.S. Open by virtue of winning the 2005 U.S. Senior Open. At Winged Foot Golf Club, Doyle again shot rounds of 76-74 to miss the cut by one stroke.
  • Doyle will be playing in his second consecutive U.S. Open this week after successfully defending his U.S. Senior Open title in 2006 by defeating Tom Watson by two strokes. Doyle will play with Olin Browne and Tom Byrum at Oakmont Country Club beginning Thursday. Doyle, at 58, is the oldest player in the field. He will tee off at 7:22 a.m. EDT June 14 and 12:52 p.m. EDT Friday, June 15.
  • One more on Doyle -- this season on the Champions Tour, Doyle's best finish was a runner-up showing at The ACE Group Classic. In his Champions Tour career, Doyle has won nearly $13 million and 11 titles.
  • • Five players 60 or older finished in the Top 10 last week at the Principal Charity Classic. Jay Sigel (T4) led the way, followed by Hale Irwin (T7), Vicente Fernandez (T10), Dave Stockton (T10) and Bruce Summerhays (T10).

    • Jay Sigel's T4 finish last week at age 63 marked his best Champions Tour outing since a T4 in the 2004 Allianz Championship.

    • They say putting gets tougher as you get older, but you can't prove that by Hale Irwin. The 62-year old Irwin has gone 180 consecutive holes without a three-putt.

Jay Haas is on a hot pace. Hale Irwin, who holds the Tour record for career wins with 45, earned his ninth career title in his 49th start. Haas just collected his ninth career title in just his 48th start.
