Glover starting to pile up the Presidents Cup points PGATOUR.com Staff They're so close they can almost taste it. They're one good finish away, and they can start making their arrangements to travel to Canada. ![]() Lucas Glover has three straight top-15 finishes. (WireImage) Last week may have been a quiet week for the Presidents Cup race with most of the world's top players preparing for this week's British Open. Quiet as it may have been, it allowed for some players to quietly move within arm's reach of Royal Montreal. Lucas Glover, who last year was very outspoken about making the U.S. Ryder Cup team but failed to do so after a disappointing summer, has gradually moved himself up to the No. 11 spot in the American standings, just one place shy of a spot on the team. Since missing the cut at the U.S. Open, Glover has shown tremendous determination tying for 10th, 12th and 11th in his last three events. Glover has said he wants to make this team, and he is playing like he wants to make this team bad. He hasn't been outside the top-15 all summer, and has consistently had low scores in the tournaments with the largest purses -- the events that he needs to play well in since the American standings are based on money earned. And since points are doubled for the Americans this year, Glover's $90,200 check from the John Deere Classic was a boost big enough to put him firmly in contention. Aaron Baddeley, like his American counterpart, Glover, is also battling for a place on the International team. At No. 11 in the standings, the Aussie is less than 10 points shy of catching up with current No. 10 Nick O'Hern. Baddeley had put himself in position for a spot early in the season. His win and his high finish at the Memorial Tournament kept him firmly in the top-10 until he dropped his lead at the U.S. Open. Baddeley started to fall out of contention with his tie for 13th and continued to fall even farther with his tie for 69th at the AT&T National. While Baddeley and Glover are one good finish away from making the team, others are one bad finish away from not making the team. Players like O'Hern and Trevor Immelman, and Stewart Cink and John Rollins are trying to hold on to their spots on their respective teams. Immelman's tie for 71st after the second round of the Barclays Scottish Open this week didn't earn him a paycheck, and didn't help his No. 9 place on the International standings. However, it also didn't hurt his standing either. But Immelman, as well as others, need stronger finishes coming into the home stretch to be able to play for Captains Gary Player and Jack Nicklaus. Possible Captain's Picks: 1. Davis Love III, No. 18 -- Love has the overwhelmingly best record of any former Presidents Cup team members. His 16-8-4 he has compiled over the last six cups far surpasses Tiger Woods (10-9-1), Jim Furyk (10-6-2) and Phil Mickelson (9-12-7). 2. Boo Weekley, No. 34 -- Weekly may not look like a great pick to some, but his T30 at the Barclays Scottish Open shows that he can compete with some of the top international players, even on their playing field. International 1. Richard Sterne, No. 14 -- Recovered from a first round 72 to shoot 69-68-64 and finish tied for fourth last week at the Barclays Scottish Open. Sterne's finish was enough to move him up two spots. 2. Tim Clark, No. 19 -- Clark bypassed the Barclays Scottish Open, choosing instead to play in the John Deere Classic. His decision was a wise one as he narrowly missed the win at TPC Deere Run. |
