AT&T National: Second-Round Notebook PGA TOUR Staff BETHESDA, Md. -- The 36-hole cut (low 70 players and ties) in the AT&T National came at 4 over par, with 74 players making the cut. Stuart Appleby (T1) has four top-10s in 10 previous starts at PGA TOUR stops in the Washington D.C. area, including a win at the 1998 Kemper Open. At Congressional Country Club, Appleby finished T7 at the 2005 Booz Allen Classic and T36 at the 1997 U.S. Open. Through 36 holes, Stuart Appleby (T1) has only two bogeys to lead the field in fewest miscues on the week. Appleby is looking for his first top-10 since finishing T7 at the Masters Tournament. Craig Kanada (T3) has 27-of-28 Fairways Hit (96.4 percent) to lead the field in that category through 36 holes. He was a perfect 14-of-14 in Round 2 en route to a 3-under-par 67. Kanada and Vijay Singh (T6) lead the field in Greens in Regulation through 36 holes, hitting 30 of 36 GIR (83.33 percent), and Kanada had the only bogey-free round of the tournament thus far on Friday. Tiger Woods (T12) and Vijay Singh (T6) are both looking to add to their respective lists of different PGA TOUR stops with a victory. Woods has won 24 different PGA TOUR events while Singh has 23 different TOUR titles on his resume. The 2004 British Open champion Todd Hamilton (T12) opened with rounds of 69-70. Entering this week's action, Hamilton had made just three of 14 cuts in 2007 and is looking for his first top-10 since at T10 at the 2006 John Deere Classic. Three players in the top-10 through 36 holes have earned PGA TOUR victories in the Washington, D.C., area. Stuart Appleby won the 1998 Kemper Open, Billy Andrade captured the 1991 Kemper Open and Steve Stricker took the 1996 Kemper Open. Vijay Singh (T6) extended his PGA TOUR-leading streak of consecutive cuts made to 27 this week. Tiger Woods is third on the current active list with 17, five behind David Toms' 22. Phil Mickelson now has missed back-to-back cuts (U.S. Open-AT&T National) for the first time since 2002, when he missed the cut at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am and the Buick Invitational. With his withdrawal at the Memorial Tournament, it marks the first time since 1995 (missed cuts at the Nissan Open-The Honda Classic-Nestle Invitational) when he has failed to play on the weekend in three consecutive starts. Despite missing three months of the 2007 season thus far due to back problems, Justin Rose (T9) has fashioned an outstanding season, with five top-10s in eight starts. He is one of just five players to post top-10s in both majors this year, and enters the AT&T National with four consecutive top-10s. Woody Austin (MC) is playing his sixth consecutive week on the PGA TOUR, having earned a victory in the third start at the Stanford St. Jude Championship. He has committed to make it seven next week at the John Deere Classic. Tournament host Tiger Woods (T12) stormed into contention with a 4-under-par 66 on Friday, with birdies on his last three holes (Nos. 7-9). The putter rebounded in the second round as Woods needed only 25 putts to negotiate the greens at Congressional Country Club after using 34 putts in Round 1. Woods and Mike Weir (T9) shared low-round honors on Friday. Wisconsin native Jerry Kelly (T12) will be throwing out the first pitch at Friday evening's Major League Baseball contest between the Washington Nationals and his home state Milwaukee Brewers. Shaun Micheel withdrew after nine holes on Friday due to a right foot injury. Micheel had surgery to remove plantars warts several years ago, and he aggravated the foot on Friday. Micheel shot a first-round 71 and was 6 over par on the day before retiring. |
