Reno-Tahoe Open: Second-round notes

Aug. 3, 2007

• The cut fell at even-par 144 with 78 players making it to the weekend.

Steve Flesch's rounds of 63-69-132 give him the solo lead heading into the weekend. He joins Phil Mickelson (THE PLAYERS Championship) as the only left-handed player to hold the lead by himself through 36 holes on the 2007 PGA TOUR.

• This is the fifth time in Flesch's TOUR career that he has been a leader or co-leader through 36 holes and the second time at the Reno-Tahoe Open. He has never won when in that situation after two rounds.

• The only 36-hole leaders at the Reno-Tahoe Open to go on and win were Vaughn Taylor (2005) and John Cook (2001).

Charles Warren's second-round 63 bettered his previous round two best in a PGA TOUR event by three shots. Warren's previous low second-round score was 66, which he recorded three times.

• Warren's rounds of 71-63-134 leave him solo second heading into the weekend. His previous best standing through 36 holes in a TOUR event was fourth (2007 Travelers Championship, 1999 AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am).

Jose Coceres, with rounds of 64-72-136, has himself in position to record his fourth top-5 finish of the 2007 season. His even-par round of 72 might be a good omen in that Coceres has failed to break 70 in the second round of each of his top-five finishes.

• Coceres, who recorded a hole-in-one at the par-3 seventh in Thursday's opening round, is looking to become the 17th winner of a PGA TOUR event to record an ace that same week. Most recently, Jim Furyk accomplished the feat last week at the Canadian Open presented by Franklin Templeton Investments.

• Former Virginia Tech star Johnson Wagner put together opening rounds in the 60s for the first time since this year's Bob Hope Chrysler Classic in January (66-67-74-67-74-348). Wagner had missed 12 of 13 cuts since the horrific massacre on the campus of his alma mater.

• Wagner was paired with former VT teammate Brendon de Jonge, who shot rounds of 67-70-137 to put himself into contention heading into the weekend. De Jonge had a similar drought of his own, missing seven of 10 cuts since the tragedy. The only other time the two have been paired together in a PGA TOUR event was earlier this year at the Stanford St. Jude Championship.

• On the 2007 PGA TOUR, only three players have managed to record 100 or fewer putts in a single tournament. Through two rounds at the Reno-Tahoe Open, 18 players have averaged 25 or fewer putts per round in an attempt to add their names to that list.

• The Reno-Tahoe Open has never had a foreign-born champion. Through two rounds, four foreign-born players find themselves in the top-10: Jose Coceres, Argentina; Brendon de Jonge, Zimbabwe; Steve Allan, Australia; Jarrod Lyle, Australia.

George McNeill and Bob Burns withdrew after the completion of the first round...Greg Owen withdrew during the second round due to a back/hip injury...Steve Jones was disqualified for failing to sign his scorecard.
