PODS Championship: Third-Round Notebook PGA TOUR Staff PALM HARBOR, Fla. -- The PODS Championship has a unique relationship with Daylight Savings Time. This year, clocks will "spring forward" one hour on Saturday night to begin Daylight Savings Time. When the tournament was held here last October, clocks had to "fall back" one hour to signify the end of Daylight Savings Time. ![]() Heath Slocum has posted three rounds in the 60s over the tough Copperhead Course. In the seven-year history of the PODS Championship, only three players have posted four rounds in the 60s in the same week -- K. J. Choi in 2002 and both Vijay Singh and Jesper Parnevik in 2004. Through three days, Chris DiMarco (69-69-69), K. J. Choi (69-69-67) and co-leader Heath Slocum (68-69-67) have chances to match that. Mark Calcavecchia tied the Copperhead Course record with a 9-under-par 62 Saturday in the third round of the PODS Championship. Calcavecchia matched the record set by Jeff Sluman in the first round back in 2004. For the day, Calcavecchia hit 9 of 13 fairways, 14 of 18 greens in regulation and had 23 putts. His 62 was the lowest third-round score posted in the tournament's seven-year history. Mark Calcavecchia's 62 is his best score since he posted his career-low round of 60 in the second round of the 2001 Phoenix Open, which he went on to win. The span between his 60 in 2001 and his 62 Saturday is 155 PGA TOUR starts and 522 stroke-play rounds. Mark Calcavecchia has posted rounds of 75-67-62 for his 9-under 204 total. Putting has the been the key for the Florida resident. He had 36 in Thursday's first round, but 23 putts on Friday and 23 putts again on Saturday. Mark Calcavecchia's 129 total in rounds 2-3 (67-62) is the lowest 36-hole score in tournament history. K. J. Choi held the record of 131 (63-68) in the opening two rounds back in 2002. Second-round leader Stephen Leaney celebrated his 38th birthday on Saturday. Leaney shot a 1-over-par 72 and is tied for eighth heading into Sunday's final round, four shots off the pace. Saturday's third round marked the first time in eight rounds in tournament history there hasn't been an outright leader following completion of a round. The last time two or more players shared the lead following a round here was after three rounds of the 2005 event when Steve Lowery and Carl Pettersson shared the lead at 9 under. This year's co-leaders, Mark Calcavecchia and Heath Slocum, are also at 9 under par. There were five bogey-free rounds on Saturday, compared to two on Thursday and none on Friday. The were scored by Zach Johnson (66), K. J. Choi (67), Charles Howell III (68), Anthony Kim (68) and Bubba Watson ( 69).
There were no eagles recorded during Saturday's third round. There were nine eagles on Thursday and five eagles on Friday. Six players in the top 10 of the current FedExCup points standings are still in the hunt. They are No. 1 Charles Howell III (T34), No. 3 Vijay Singh (T34), No. 4 John Rollins (T34), No. 7 Mark Wilson (T21), No. 9 Paul Goydos (T15) and No. 10 Charley Hoffman (T8). The closing holes may critical in deciding the champion on Sunday, as they have been very difficult so far this week. The par-4 No. 16 is playing to a scoring average of 4.327 and is the toughest hole on the course. The par-3 No. 17 is playing to a 3.147 average and is ranked sixth. And the par-4 No. 18 is playing to a 4.219 average and is ranked second. Copyright 2007 PGATOUR.com. All rights reserved. |
