Oct. 24, 2007 Who could surprise? Tournament coverage

Man, I like this guy. I've really liked him ever since he finished 11th at THE PLAYERS Championship. He had a chance to win with three holes to play and then saw the opportunity sink into the water behind the famous 17th island green. O'Hair was asked that Sunday if he realized how much money he had cost himself with that errant shot. Rather than wallow in defeat, O'Hair said he didn't care about the money because he'd make plenty of it during his career -- he was playing for the crystal. Awesome attitude. In his last four starts, O'Hair has three top-13 finishes. This might be the week that he gets that crystal.

He missed six of his first seven cuts this season, through the PODS Championship, and looked as if he might wind up struggling all the way to q-school. Instead, he's missed only one other cut on this side of the Atlantic Ocean (U.S. Open). His tie for fourth in last week's Fry's Electronics Open looked mighty good, although it lacked a slam-bang low round (68-66-68-69). He can atone this week, right?

Pick: Jesper Parnevik
He led the Valero Texas Open most of the week only to lose to Justin Leonard in a playoff. Parnevik -- who had picked up a new putter in Texas that worked wonders -- followed that with a tie for 14th at the Frys.com Open. After taking the Fry's Electronics Open off, Parnevik is back and could continue his late-season run.

He went for it at TPC Sawgrass and it didn't work. He's been working his way back since THE PLAYERS Championship, though, and, well, can you think of a more fitting state to complete the comeback?

Pick: Carl Pettersson
He has solid record in the fall and knows how to win. Pettersson is coming off tie for fourth last week and sits 32nd on the money list. Another good event gets him all the top-30 perks and should be enough motivation to play well.

Pick: Robert Allenby
I am going alphabetically this week. Robert Allenby has been out of the winner's circle for too long. He has played well, not only here, but all over the world. It wasn't long ago that he won the Australian triple crown. He plays well in South Florida with two top-10s this year. Add to that another top-10 in Hawaii under similar conditions and you have to like the Aussie's chances this week.

Pick: Carl Pettersson
He didn't play as well as he would have liked on Sunday in Scottsdale, but that tie for fourth at the Fry's Electronics Open still was his third top-10 in his last four starts. In fact, he's placed fifth or better four times in the last 10 tournament's he's played, so Pettersson is definitely due.

Runner-up at THE PLAYERS Championship, O'Hair is coming off a good showing in Arizona. He has all the shots, and he has won once before on TOUR, so the only pressure he should feel is the kind that good players put on themselves. He knows he belongs in Kapalua in January. Now he has to earn the trip.
The Champions Tour ends its season this week at the Charles Schwab Cup Championship in Sonoma, Calif. PGATOUR.com Editorial Coordinator Lauren Deason gives us her pick:
Loren Roberts
With some of the fastest greens on either the Champions Tour or PGA TOUR, according to Jay Haas, the Charles Schwab Cup Championship favors a putter like Loren Roberts. Plus, a win at the season-ending event would earn him the Charles Schwab Cup, something he lost last year but just 20 points when he three-putted the final hole.
The Nationwide Tour rolls on at the Miccosukee Championship. PGATOUR.com Nationwide Tour expert Dave Lagarde gives us his pick:
Brenden Pappas
There ought to be a rule against a guy being on the bubble for as long as this affable South African has, not only in 2007 but also in 2006. It's hard not to pull for him to take care of business.
