With a second-round, 5-under-par, 68, Bob Estes tied the 2007 PGA TOUR low first-36 hole total of 14-under par. When he won the 2001 FedEx St. Jude Classic, Estes was 15-under par following the first two rounds. Bob Estes has held at least a share of the lead six times following the second round, two of which he has parlayed into victory; the 1991 Texas Open and 2001 FedEx St. Jude Classic The last time Bob Estes held a share of a 36-hole lead was the 2007 Shell Houston Open, where he ultimately finished tied for ninth. In round two, Bob Estes hit 13 of 15 fairways in regulation, and was 14 for 18 in greens hit. Estes is currently ranked ninth in putting average on the 2007 PGA TOUR. In round one, he needed only 27 putts, with 28 in round two. Estes has not three-putted through 36 holes. Nineteen days after his 48th birthday, Tommy Armour III posted scores identical to Bob Estes of 64-68. The last time Armour held a 36-hole lead was at the 2003 Valero Texas Open. The Dallas native went on to claim that title in San Antonio for his second, and most recent, PGA TOUR win. Tommy Armour III, who hit 17 of 18 greens in regulation in round one, hit 16 of 18 in round two. If Armour Ior Bob Estes were to win this week, he would be the eighth different player in his forties to win on the 2007 PGA TOUR in his 40's. Steve Lowery, who turned 47 two weeks ago (October 12) is four shots back following a second round, 7-under-par 66, making him the third player in his 40s in the top five after 36 holes. Currently ranked 148th on the PGA TOUR Money List, Lowery has himself in good position after two holes to move towards the inside of the top 125. Making the commute from his Orlando home, Daniel Chopra remained bogey-free headed into the weekend by firing a second-round, 7-under-par, 66. Daisuke Maruyama, who racked up his best finish of the year with a tie for sixth at last week's Fry's Electronics Open, finds himself in good position again this week thanks to a 7-under-par 66 Friday to settle into seventh place at 137. On the heels of a tie for fourth last week, Sean O'Hair continues his solid play this week at the Tesoro Club. Back-to-back five-under-par 68's have him tied for fourth, four shots back of the leaders. Justin Leonard bounced back after yesterday's even-par 73 with a 4-under-par 69 in round two. Since his tie for 13th at the Turning Stone Resort Championship, Leonard has won the Valero Texas Open and finished tied for sixth at last week's Fry's Electronics Open. In the Fall Series, Leonard holds the lowest scoring average on the PGA TOUR of 67.5. He is also ranked second in Fall Series earnings with $1,070, 450. To demonstrate the diversity in age of competitors this week, consider this: Michael Sim turned 23 on Tuesday. He will likely be paired in round three with Tommy Armour III who, as previously noted, turned 48 years old earlier this month. Identical twin amateurs, Derek and Daryl Fathauer each shot a 2-over-par 75 to miss the cut in their first PGA TOUR starts. Derek finish at 1 over for the tournament and Daryl finished at 5 over for the tournament. J.B. Holmes did not show up for his scheduled tee time this afternoon (1:50 p.m.) and was disqualified for an improper withdrawl. Carlos Franco was disqualified for signing an incorrect scorecard. Franco signed for a "2" on the par-3, 17th when he actually made a "3." Mark Calcavecchia withdrew in the middle of his round due to sickness (vertigo). |
