(Condon/PGA TOUR/WireImage) The duo played bogey-free golf over the 36-hole, better-ball competition, finishing at 15-under par 129, four strokes better than two-time defending champs Orville Moody and Jimmy Powell. The Demaret Division is a team competition for golfers aged 70 and over. "This is a special win for us," said Nichols after the round. "It's so easy to play with Butch and he did a great job hitting fairways which really helped us out there." Baird made six of the team's eight birdies in the final round. The team started with birdies on three of the first four holes and never allowed Moody and Powell to get closer than three strokes the rest of the way. "I've been preparing for this tournament for three months, so it feels great to win," Baird said afterward. "I enjoyed playing with Bobby this year. He's got artificial hips and can still compete and play very well. We won this together." The winning team will split the first-place Demaret Division's check of $95,000. A total of 12 teams competed for an unofficial purse of $370,000. Baird and Nichols first played together as a team in 1990 at the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf at Barton Creek in Austin, Texas. The two have known each other since their days playing college golf in Texas -- Nichols at Texas A&M in College Station and Baird at Lamar University in Beaumont. Competitive play at the Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Resort & Spa resumes on Friday with the first round of the Raphael team division and the Legends individual division. Tom Watson and Andy North are the defending Raphael Division (ages 50-69) champions while Jay Haas defends his title in the Legends Division. For the first time, this event will be televised by GOLF CHANNEL and CBS. GOLF CHANNEL will provide live coverage on Friday from 12:30-3:30 p.m. ET, while CBS's live coverage on Saturday and Sunday will be from 1-3 p.m. ET. |
