• The play of Romero and Zoeller was instrumental in the pair making the day's biggest moves. Each opened with 3-over-par 73s on Thursday and, thanks to 66s on Friday, they jumped 33 spots in the standings from tied for 49th to tied for 16th.

• Des Smyth certainly had one of Friday's strangest rounds. After running off nine consecutive pars on the front nine, Smyth's back nine included six birdies, two bogeys and a par on his way to 4-under-par 66.

• One day after ranking as the tournament's hardest hole, No. 18 at Baltimore Country Club dropped three spots to the fourth hardest on Friday. It yielded just one birdie on Thursday, but five players made birdies on the closing hole Friday, including the top two players on the leaderboard -- Loren Roberts and Scott Hoch.

• Hole No. 13 was the most difficult with a scoring average of 4.308 (+.308). The only two players to make birdie were Mark McNulty and Bob Gilder. The day's easiest hole was No. 4 once again.

• Veteran Ed Dougherty leads all players in birdies after 36 holes with 11, one more than Curtis Strange. Dougherty shot a 3-under-par 67 on Friday and is tied for fifth after two rounds. He is seeking his first top-10 finish since he tied for sixth at the Allianz Championship in June 2006.

• Friday's scoring average dropped exactly one stroke from Thursday's scoring average of 71.462 as the field averaged 70.462. A total of 29 players fashioned rounds under par compared to 19 on Thursday and there were 42 players at par or better compared to 32 after round one.

Wayne Levi has hit 16 of 28 fairways and Tom Watson and D.A. Weibring have each hit 31 of 36 greens in regulation to lead all players in those categories. Loren Roberts has the fewest putts after 36 holes with 53.

• Maryland native Fred Funk followed his 2-under-par 68 with a 1-under-par 69 on Friday and is tied for fifth at the halfway point. He trails Loren Roberts by four strokes.

• Loren Roberts, Mark James, Eduardo Romero and David Eger all enjoyed bogey-free rounds on Friday. Don Pooley shaved seven strokes off his Thursday score when he shot a 3-under-par 67 on Friday. That helped him jump 28 places from tied for 59th to tied for 31st.
