Who could win the Charles Schwab Cup?

Oct. 22, 2007

We're keeping it simple this week when determining who has a shot at winning the Charles Schwab Cup. Here's all you need to know:

1. Like the five Champions Tour majors, double points are offered in the season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship. Example: the winner's share of the purse is $442,000. Take 442 and multiply by two to determine the 884 first place points.

2. Only top-10 finishes are rewarded with Charles Schwab Cup points. And don't worry about trying to calculate the totals -- we've got a chart below that explains the points payout (provided there are no ties).

3. Four players have a chance to win. Unless Tom Watson or Bart Bryant earn a victory at the Charles Schwab Cup Championship, neither has a chance of passing Loren Roberts or Jay Haas. Take a look at the current top 10:

Top 10
Rank Last Week Player Events Points Wins Top 10s
1 1 Loren Roberts 22 2,716 2 14
2 2 Jay Haas 26 2,551 4 18
3 3 Tom Watson 11 2,032 2 8
4 4 Brad Bryant 23 2,019 2 9
5 5 Denis Watson 24 1,707 2 11
6 6 D.A. Weibring 26 1,562 1 12
7 7 R.W. Eaks 25 1,438 2 11
8 8 Tom Kite 27 1,358 - 10
9 9 Eduardo Romero 18 1,204 - 9
10 10 Hale Irwin 20 1,164 1 9

4. If Loren Roberts places outside the top 10 and Jay Haas lands amongst the top 9, Haas will beat Roberts by one point.

5. Should Loren Roberts finish 10th, Jay Haas must be in fourth place or better to win the Cup.

6. Loren Roberts begins the week having accumulated 2,716 points throughout the year. Jay Haas has 2,551 points, Tom Watson has 2,032 points and Brad Bryant has 2,019 points.
