Key things to remember when hitting a chip from deep greenside rough:
Open your clubface
Open your stance
Accelerate the clubhead through impact
I want to show you how to get out of some deep, nasty lies around the greens. My first key is to access my lie -- that is the No. 1 key. Access your lie and see what the grain of the grass is doing and how nasty it is.
The next thing I do personally is reach for my 60 degree wedge when I have a short-sided pin because you need all the loft you can get. I will come in here and if it looks like it is not too bad, I will open the blade up really wide and put the ball up in my stance and make sure I hit a nice little flop shot in there and keep accelerating through.
The key to these nasty greenside rough shots is
1. Open the clubface.
2. Open your stance
3. Make sure you really accelerate the club through.
You have to have realistic expectations. You want to get the ball out of this nasty rough first and foremost -- so don't think you're going to one-hop it into the hole or knock it really close.
Just make sure you get it out first. Just remember, you don't have to knock it to three feet. You'll have a putt for par nine times out of ten.
