Nov. 14, 2008

The final score posted in the 2008 season was a 64 by Davis Love III to clinch the title at the Children's Miracle Network Classic at Walt Disney World. But there were loads of other numbers pertinent to the 2008 season and PGATOUR.COM's ShotLink analyst Kin Lo takes a look at some of the most interesting.

Money
20 Number of times since 1980 (29 years) that the leading money winner on the PGA TOUR has earned more than one million dollars.
617 The total number of unique players that competed in an official PGA TOUR event this year. Of these players, 243 did not earn a single dollar in prize money.
1,710,000 The biggest winner's paycheck of the year, collected by Sergio Garcia at THE PLAYERS Championship. Garcia took 283 strokes in regulation play and three more in the playoff with Paul Goydos, for a total of 286 strokes at the event. That works out to approximately $5,979 dollars per stroke - not bad for a weekend on the golf course.
6,601,094 Earnings of leading money winner Vijay Singh. This is the third time in his career that Singh has led the money list for a season (2008, 2004, and 2003). It is also the lowest dollar amount to lead the money list since 2001 when Tiger Woods ranked first with $5,687,777.
60,709,312 All-time career earnings of Vijay Singh, second only to Tiger Woods $82,354,376. Singh has now held the second-place position for the fifth consecutive year since he passed Davis Love III in 2004.
281,105,051 Total prize money in 2008 paid out at official events in 2008, up over three percent from the $272,304,891 paid in 2007.
Percentage of money won
  2008 2000 1990 1980
Top fifth 53% 61% 64% 73%
2nd fifth 25% 21% 23% 19%
3rd fifth 15% 12% 10% 6%
4th fifth 6% 5% 2% 2%
Bottom fifth 1% 1% 0.29% 0.34%
NOTE: The table above represents the percentage of total prize money earned by different tiers of the PGA TOUR earnings ladder. In other words, the top 20 percent of earners in 2008 took home 53 percent of the available purse. It's interesting that the trend is actually towards greater distribution. Players in lower tiers are took home a greater percentage of the available purse in 2008 than they did in 1980. Does this mean more parity? Does it mean stronger fields?
Tiger -- By the Numbers
1.67 Tiger Woods average ranking on the year-end money list in the 12 seasons after his rookie year in 1996. If you include his 1996 finish of 24th, Woods career average finish on the money list is third.
2 Tiger Woods final rank on the 2008 money list. Woods competed in just six events this year - the highest rank of any player since 1980 competing in less than 10 events. In this time period, the average rank of players competing in 10 events or less (not including Tiger Woods) is 85th. The next highest finish was seventh by Jose Maria Olazabal in 1994 in eight events. The highest rank of any other player competing in less than 10 events in 2008 is 151st (Greg Norman in four events).
366,019 Average money per event for Tiger Woods in his 13 seasons on TOUR. Woods has earned a total of $82, 354,376 in 225 events. This is more than double the next highest of Adam Scott with an average of $175,757 with $17,927,178 in career earnings in 102 events.
962,500 Average money per event Tiger Woods earned in 2008 - the highest average in history. Woods earned $5,775,000 in six events played. To put this figure in context, consider that second on the list for this season is two-time major winner Padraig Harrington with $4,313,551 earned in 15 events for an average of $287,570 per event - 70 percent less than Woods's average. For all players that earned money on TOUR in 2008, the average per event was $42,603, slightly more than 4 percent of Tiger's average. In his 13 years on TOUR, Tiger Woods has led in average money per event 10 times, and led the money list outright seven times.
