Accenture Match Play Championship: Second-Day Notebook

Feb. 21, 2008

MARANA, Ariz. -- Tiger Woods, who defeated Arron Oberholser 3 and 2 in the second round Thursday, improves his record to 27-6 in his ninth year playing this event. Woods is 17-4 against the international players and 10-2 against his fellow Americans. Woods' two losses against his countrymen were against Jeff Maggert in the Quarterfinals of the inaugural event in 1999 and Chad Campbell in the third round in 2006.

Inside the Numbers
Most Consecutive Matches Won in This Event
Player Wins Years
Tiger Woods 13 2003-05
Geoff Ogilvy 11 2006-07
David Toms 8 2005-06
Kevin Sutherland 8 2002-03
Henrik Stenson 8 2007-08

• Woods, who plays Australian Aaron Baddeley in the third round, has four losses against International players in this event, three times to an Australian - to Peter O'Malley in the first round in 2002 and twice to Nick O'Hern (2005, 2007) -- and then Northern Ireland's Darren Clarke in the finals of 2000, 4 and 3.

• With his victory on Thursday, Tiger Woods ran his career Accenture Match Play Championship record to 27-6 and has won 19 of his last 22 matches.

David Toms conceded his second-round match versus Aaron Baddeley due to a back injury.

Rule 2--4 (Match Play - Concession of Match, Hole or Next Stroke) of the USGA Rules of Golf states the following: "A player may concede a match at any time prior to the start or conclusion of that match."

Based on Rule 2-4, Toms "conceded" his match to Baddeley. This is an important distinction as it is considerably different from a "withdrawal" from the event. This is a nuance of match-play competitions versus stroke-play competitions. In conclusion, with Toms having conceded his match, he is entitled to receive $90,000 official prize money as well as 262 FedExCup points as a loser of a second-round match.

• Aaron Baddeley will play Tiger Woods in the third round. Last year they were paired together in the final round of the U.S. Open when Baddeley held a two-stroke lead over Woods after 54-holes at Oakmount CC. Baddeley triple bogeyed the first hole en route to 10-over-par 80. Baddeley and Woods were also paired together in the first two rounds of the 2007 Masters Tournament -- Woods (73-74) and Baddeley (79-72).

Stuart Appleby is participating in his 27th career World Golf Championships event this week, having competed in every World Golf Championships event since the inception of the series in 1999. The 2001 American Express Championship was canceled due to the events of Sept. 11. Appleby is the only player to compete in all 10 Accenture Match Play Championships. Justin Leonard had played the first eight but did not qualify in 2007 because his Official World Golf Ranking dropped to No. 181. He is back this year, moving to No. 51 on the OWGR.

• Nine of the 20 international players won their second-round matches, while seven of the 12 United States players won their second-round matches. Eight of the 12 nations originally represented in the field still have players in the hunt. Seven Americans are still alive, the most of any nation.

Adam Scott, who lost to Woody Austin in 19 holes in round two, was making his seventh appearance at the Accenture Match Play Championship; all of his departures from the event have come against a player from the United States. His conquerors are Brad Faxon (2002), Tiger Woods 19 holes (2003), Davis Love III (2004), David Toms (2005), Tom Lehman (2006) and Shaun Micheel (2007).

• Of the 17 first-time participants this week, three have moved on to the third round. They are Boo Weekley, (No. 44), Woody Austin (No. 37) and Jonathan Byrd (No. 62).

• Six of the 16 players remaining have never advanced to the third round: Woody Austin, Boo Weekely, K.J. Choi, Jonathan Byrd, Angel Cabrera and Rod Pampling. Austin will play Weekley in round three.

Stewart Cink defeated Padraig Harrington 2-up in the second round, improving his record against Harrington to 4-0. Thursday's match was a rematch of last year's second round, when Cink took a 1-up victory over the Irishman. Cink has also defeated Harrington twice in the Ryder Cup.
