SAVANNAH, Ga. -- Al Geiberger and Jimmy Powell teamed up for a record 10-under-par 62 on Tuesday and posted a five-stroke victory over the teams of Butch Baird/Bobby Nichols, Dale Douglass/Charles Coody and Tommy Aaron/Don Bies in the Demaret Division (players 70+) of the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf. The pair posted a winning score of 18-under-par 126.
The 10-under-par 62 broke the 18-hole scoring record in the Demaret Division, which was set in 2005 by Powell and Orville Moody.
Geiberger and Powell shared the lead at the start of the day with Baird and Nichols but built a comfortable five-stroke margin on the front nine thanks to five birdies and an eagle. Powell delivered the critical blow to the field when he sank a wedge from 92 yards away for an eagle at No. 9. They added three more birdies on the back nine for their 62.
"Al and I had a great time playing together today, and he was a great partner," said Powell, who has now won three titles in the Demaret Division to go along with his three wins in the Raphael Division. He won all five previous titles with Moody. It was Geiberger's second win. He teamed with Harold Henning to win the Legends Division in the event in 1989.
Geiberger and Powell each won $40,000 for their victory, while the teams of Baird/Nichols, Douglass/Coody and Aaron/Bies shared second place with each team splitting $35,000.
