FORT SMITH, Ark. -- Day 2 of the Fort Smith Classic has taken on a decidedly different look. The color of the day is pink as the tournament celebrates Pink on the Links in the name of breast cancer awareness and education at Hardscrabble Country Club.

Tournament Director Patricia Brown is a breast cancer survivor and came up with the idea for the event, which is in its 12th year in Northwest Arkansas.

"After going through my battle with breast cancer, I was looking forward to giving people in the community an opportunity to learn about it," Brown said. "Ultimately, what we're trying to do is save lives."

Nationwide Tour players and officials, as well as tournament staff, volunteers and fans are dressed in various shades of pink to support the Ozark Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

"To see somebody not wearing pink is the exception today," said Ryan Hietala. "I think this is a great way for all of us to reach out in support of those affected by breast cancer."

Some players are dressed in pink from head to toe -- hats to shoes.

"I think there should be something like this every week on the Nationwide Tour, the PGA TOUR and the Champions Tour," said Arron Oberholser, a PGA TOUR member who is playing for the first time since aggravating a wrist injury in early February.

"I think it's important to get the community involved in the charity aspect of the TOUR. It's a way for us to let the communities know we care, and we want to help in any way we can."

Breast cancer survivors will be honored throughout the event and are filling on-course volunteer positions and walking with the pros during play.

The day began with a ceremonial tee shot prior to the start of play and includes a Pink Zone featuring health, beauty, sports and fun, along with a fashion show, door prizes and an evening party with entertainment by The Bouffants, known for their big hair and big voices.
