That Justin Leonard has been successful on the PGA TOUR should come as no surprise to anyone who followed his amateur career. The Dallas native followed in the footsteps of Ben Crenshaw and Tom Kite at the University of Texas, where he was an All-American in 1993-94, the latter being the year he won the Dave Williams Award. He won the 1992 U.S. Amateur and was a member of the winning 1993 United States Walker Cup team. He played in eight TOUR events as an amateur, making five cuts. He joined the TOUR in 1994 and broke through with his first victory at the 1996 Buick Open. Coming into the 2009 season he had 12 TOUR victories including the 1997 British Open.
