SAN FRANCISCO -- The 2009 Presidents Cup continues Saturday afternoon with five Four-ball matches. Sitting out: Camilo Villegas, Retief Goosen (International) and Kenny Perry, Hunter Mahan (U.S.). Here's the lineup:
| Saturday afternoon's Four-Balls |
ANGEL CABRERA ADAM SCOTT |
JIM FURYK ANTHONY KIM |
Match time: 3:05 p.m. ET; 12:05 p.m. (local) Presidents Cup records: Angel Cabrera (3-5-3 overall, 1-2-2 Four-Balls); Adam Scott (8-8-2, 3-3-1 Four-Balls); Jim Furyk (14-9-3 overall, 5-5-0 Four-Balls); Anthony Kim (1-1-0, 0-1-0 Four-Balls). International analysis: This could be a wild one. The key will be making sure one player is in each hole and that's hardly a given with these two. Cabrera, who has yet to score a point this week, sat out the morning session but he can be a birdie machine when he gets untracked. Scott is 1-2-0 after losing in the morning Foursomes with Ernie Els but the controversial Captain's Pick seems to have gotten his game under control. U.S. analysis: If opposites attract, this is a match made in heaven. Kim is rife with emotion, and he'll be eager to please after sitting out the morning session. Furyk is as steady as they come, which on paper should complement Kim's go-like-gangbusters demeanor. The rookie only came up with one birdie in their Four-ball match on Friday, though, and the Internationals won the final three holes to seal the victory. |

ROBERT ALLENBY GEOFF OGILVY |
STEWART CINK LUCAS GLOVER |
Match time: 3:17 p.m. ET; 12:17 p.m. (local) Presidents Cup records: Ronert Allenby (7-12-3 overall, 3-5-0 Four-Balls); Geoff Ogilvy (2-5-0 overall, 1-2-0 Four-Balls); Stewart Cink (8-6-2 overall, 2-3-1 Four-Balls); Lucas Glover (2-5-0, 0-3-0 Four-Balls). International analysis: The two Aussies are playing in their first Presidents Cup together. Ogilvy, a two-time winner early this year, sat out the morning Foursomes and will be looking to show some form after two losses. At least he won't be facing Tiger Woods and Steve Stricker for the third straight match. Perhaps Allenby's steady ball-striking will rub off on his countryman. U.S. analysis: Like Ogilvy, Glover didn't play in the morning matches so he'll have added incentive partnering with his good friend for the third time this week. Both of their previous matches reached the 18th hole, though, so the determination is there. Cink and Glover rallied from 2 down in Foursomes only to see Allenby and Vijay Singh win the last two holes. In Four-ball, though, Glover couldn't buy a birdie so he'll need to get untracked. |
|
ERNIE ELS MIKE WEIR |
ZACH JOHNSON JUSTIN LEONARD |
Match time: 3:30 p.m. ET; 12:30 p.m. (local) Presidents Cup records: Ernie Els (15-11-2 overall, 7-3-1 Four-Balls); Mike Weir (12-8-2 overall, 6-2-0 Four-Balls); Zach Johnson (4-3-0 overall, 1-1-0 Four-Balls); Justin Leonard (8-10-3 overall, 3-4-0 Four-Balls) International analysis: Els and Weir have turned into one of Greg Norman's juggernauts. They won both their Four-ball matches two years ago and picked up a third victory over Jim Furyk and Anthony Kim on Friday by gutting out wins on the final three holes. Weir is coming off a hard-fought match with Tiger Woods and Steve Stricker while Els must regroup after a lop-sided loss with Adam Scott. U.S. analysis: Think grit and determination. Captain Fred Couples put his two bulldogs together in this match. Johnson won his Four-ball match with Hunter Mahan and is is 2-1-0 overall this week. Leonard, meanwhile, came back after a disheartening missed putt on the 18th hole of his opening Foursomes that cost the Americans a full point to win his next two matches. He and Johnson should complement each other well. |
|
RYO ISHIKAWA Y.E. YANG |
STEVE STRICKER TIGER WOODS |
Match time: 3:42 p.m. ET; 12:42 p.m. (local) Presidents Cup records: Ryo Ishikawa (2-1-0 overall, 1-0-0 Four-Ball); Y.E. Yang (2-0-1 overall, 1-0-0 Four-Ball); Steve Stricker (8-5-0 overall, 3-2-0 Four-Ball); Tiger Woods (16-11-1 overall, 4-7-0 Four-Ball) International analysis: You've got to think Ishikawa is looking forward to this chance at redemption after he and Geoff Ogilvy lost 6 and 4 to the Americans in the opening Foursomes. Since that time, though, he and Yang have proven to be a formidale pairing, winning both their matches before reaching the 17th hole. But both will need to avoid getting caught up in the challenge of playing the world No. 1 and concentrate on their own games. U.S. analysis: Captain Fred Couples has backloaded his line-up this time in hopes to taking the lead -- and some momentum -- into Sunday's Singles. This is the first time Woods and Yang have played in the same group since the final round of the PGA Championship where the Korean upset the world No. 1. But the Americans are 3-0-0 as a team after winning the last two holes in a hard-fought match with Mike Weir and Tim Clark so this will be a tough one. |
|
TIM CLARK VIJAY SINGH |
PHIL MICKELSON SEAN O'HAIR |
Match time: 3:55 p.m. ET; 12:55 p.m. (local) Presidents Cup records: Tim Clark (5-7-1 overall, 4-0-1 Four-Ball); Vijay Singh (16-15-7 overall, 9-5-1 Four-Ball); Phil Mickelson (14-13-9 overall, 6-6-2 Four-Ball); Sean O'Hair (1-2-0 overall, 0-1-0 Four-Ball) International analysis: Singh and Clark played together on Friday and won that Four-ball match to bring their record to 1-0-1. It was a pretty equal partnership, too. Clark made four birdies and a conceded eagle at the 18th hole for the 1-up win over Lucas Glover and Stewart Cink while Singh contributed a trio of birdies. Singh has yet to taste defeat this week after going 1-0-1 with
Robert Allenby in Foursomes.. U.S. analysis: This is the first time Mickelson has relinquished his familiar leadoff position. But American captain Fred Couples opted to put two of his strongest teams off last in hopes of taking the upper hand into Sunday's crucial mano-y-mano battles. Mickelson is 3-0-0 this
week with three different partners, and he brought the best out in the
rookie O'Hair Saturday morning as the two took a 5-and-3 victory over Retief Goosen and Camilo Villegas. |
