JERSEY CITY, N.J. -- Paul Casey withdrew from The Barclays, which is the first event in the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup, on Monday due to a lingering rib injury.
Casey, who ranks 18th in the current FedExCup standings and No. 3 in the world, hopes to be able to play in next week's Deutsche Bank Championship, which is the second of four Playoffs event.
He will not be replaced in the field at Liberty National.
"It has been a really frustrating few weeks," Casey said on his website. "But the injury has been responding to treatment and that should hopefully allow me to return to action.
"I will continue the treatment regimen this week and prepare for the final Playoff events."
The Englishman originally injured the intercostal muscle while practicing for the 138th Open Championship. He has a strain and a tear in the muscle and has been receiving treatment at home in Arizona.
Casey tied for 47th at Turnberry then had to withdraw during the first round of the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Inviational. The winner of the Shell Houston Open earlier this year also withdrew on Thursday morning prior to the PGA Championship.
