LEMONT, Ill. -- World No. 4 Paul Casey will not be able to compete in THE TOUR Championship presented by Coca-Cola after that lingering rib injury forced him to withdraw from his fifth straight event on Wednesday.

Casey, who is currently 36th on the FedExCup points list, withdrew from the BMW Championship after playing in the pro-am Wednesday morning. Only the top 30 in the standings advance to the finale at East Lake.

The Englishman will not be replaced in the field, so 69 players are in the field at Cog Hill for the third event of the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup. That number does include world No. 3 Phil Mickelson, who had said Monday that he wanted to go home and see how his wife Amy, who is battling breast cancer, was doing before making a final decision.

Casey, who started the Playoffs ranked No. 18, has not played since he had to withdraw during the first round of the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational. He was originally injured while hitting drivers in preparation for the Open Championship and then tweaked it again hitting from the rough during a practice round at Firestone Country Club.

Casey, who has a torn oblique near the 10th rib and a strained intercostal, was unable to play in the PGA Championship, as well. He has been receiving treatment, which included a cortisone shot, at home in Arizona.
