SYNOPSIS
 Tiger Woods came to Cog Hill with momentum after winning two of his last three starts worldwide. What he didn't have, though, was the No. 1 ranking -- which he had lost three months earlier to David Duval. Woods put himself in position to regain that spot, though, when he opened up a four-stroke lead over Mike Weir with a third-round 68. Woods' closing 71 wasn't flashy but it got the job done, and his three-shot victory put him back at the top of the world. He was 12 under on the par 5s, averaged 315 yards off the tee and finished second in greens in regulation. "Being No. 1 in the world is something I had to be told about," Woods said. "It's nice, but not as nice as winning. Being No. 1 and not winning, as I was doing in 1998, that's not great. But I was changing my game then. I knew it was going to take me awhile."
