SYNOPSIS
Tiger Woods' first major championship victory began with a bogey and a 40 on the front side. Not to worry, though. He rallied to shoot 70 in that first round, leaving him three strokes off the pace. He then took the lead with a second-round 66 and never looked back. When he was done, Woods was 18 under and he had won by a record 12 strokes. He set 18 Masters records and tied six others in the process. But this victory in the Deep South was as socially significant as it was numerically historic for the 21-year-old Woods, who is of African and Asian heritage. Among the most lasting memories from the final round are the numerous waiters and kitchen workers who ran out of the massive white antebellum clubhouse to watch Woods finish. Also in the gallery that week was Lee Elder, who broke the color barrier at Augusta National in 1975. "I made history here, and I came back to see more history made today," Elder said. "To have a black champion of a major " that makes my heart feel very, very good. Tiger winning here, it could have more potential than Jackie Robinson breaking baseball's color barrier. No one will turn their head when a black man walks to the first tee." When asked about the significance of his victory, Tiger replied: "I wasn't the pioneer. Charlie Sifford, Lee Elder, Ted Rhodes " those are the guys who paved the way. All night I was thinking about them, what they've done for me and the game of golf. Coming up 18, I said a little prayer of thanks to those guys. Those are the guys who did it."
