Ben Hogan Golf, continuing to make clubs engineered for performance, is introducing a new set of irons, hybrid series and wedges this spring. The new Apex Edge irons and Apex wedges will launch in mid-April while the new line of CFT Ti hybrids began shipping to golf shops earlier this year. The Apex Edge irons, with a 180-degree undercut channel placed low in the rear of the clubs, join Ben Hogan’s 2006 irons portfolio, which includes the classically shaped Apex forged set, FTX forged transition set and a CFT hybrid iron set. The game improvement Edge irons are designed to extend Ben Hogan’s reach to a wider range of players. The six-club CFT Ti hybrid series, now spread from 14 to 27 degrees of loft, is an extension alongside Hogan’s well-received Edge CFT hybrids. Here’s a closer look at the latest from Ben Hogan Golf. APEX EDGE IRONS Forged from soft carbon steel, the heads of the Apex Edge irons are geared for a blend of performance and game improvement. The shape and lines are classic, but several features have been built in for greater forgiveness. Most notably, the rear of the club harbors a 180-undercut channel, which helps place the center of gravity low and deep while enhancing stability and providing a high launch angle. There’s a wide sole, designed to cut through the turf. The clubs seem best suited to mid-level players, ranging from mid to high single-digit handicaps up to mid double-digit golfers. “The game improvement technology [these irons] incorporate makes them an ideal high-performance option for players looking for a little more help from their equipment,” said Drew Isaacman, vp of brand management for Top-Flite and Ben Hogan, both of which are wholly owned subsidiaries of Callaway Golf.
CFT TI HYBRIDS Hogan Golf redesigned the head of the CFT Ti hybrids to provide a lower and deeper center of gravity for enhanced playability and forgiveness. “We believe the CFT Ti hybrid is a golf club that Mr. Hogan. .. would have put in his bag,” said Isaacman. The head of the new hybrid, larger than the original Edge CFT line, similarly features a Compression Forged Titanium face with a 17-4 stainless steel body. The club is engineered for a high trajectory. Like most hybrids, the clubs are meant to replace hard to hit long irons while, with a shorter shaft, providing more control but as much distance as fairway woods. The new CFT Ti hybrids come with a choice of premium graphite or steel shafts. The stock graphite shaft is the Aldila NVS Hybrid in various flexes. The True Temper Crossfire steel shaft is lightweight to aid control with a mid-flex tip design. The CFT Ti hybrid line offers more lofts than the Edge series. Nos. 0h, 1h, 2,h, 3h, 4h and 5h in the new hybrids represent lofts of 14, 17, 19, 21, 24 and 27 degrees, respectively. In testing among a variety of GolfWeb players, reviews for the new CFT Ti hybrids were mixed in comparison to the original Edge CFT line with the smaller heads. While some testers liked the new clubs, quite a few players still preferred the Edge CFT hybrids. Suggested retail prices for the new hybrids are $175 each with steel shaft, $199 with graphite. APEX WEDGES By consensus, GolfWeb testers loved Ben Hogan’s new Apex wedges, which feature a traditional style blended with tour-inspired characteristics. Forged with soft carbon steel, the Apex wedges -- Gap, Sand, Lob -- have wide, conforming grooves and a trailing edge designed to enhance shotmaking control. There’s also a slight but constant offset. Available in right-hand models only with steel shafts, the wedges come with lofts of 52, 56 and 60 degrees. List price is $135 per club. |
