TRAVELERS REST, S.C. -- Chris Stroud moved into sole possession of the lead following the second round of the Nationwide Tour’s $625,000 BMW Charity Pro-Am at The Cliffs. Stroud fired a 3-under-par 69 at the Cliffs Valley course to move to 9-under-par 134 for the tournament, one stroke in front of Scott Weatherly (66/CV). “It was a pretty solid day,” said the 24-year-old Stroud. “It was a working man’s kind of day. I had to work for everything. I didn’t hit it as crisply as I did yesterday but I missed it in the right spots.” The 2004 Lamar University graduate is making just the third start of his career on the Nationwide Tour, having missed the cut at the 2004 Virginia Beach Open and finishing tied for 19th last week at the Athens Regional Foundation Classic. Stroud made it into last week’s tournament as a Monday Qualifier and then gained entrance into this week’s field based on his top-25 finish in Athens. “I came into this week with low expectations,” said Stroud, a resident of Sea Island, Ga. “I just want to play solid golf and play my way on this Tour. I’m very happy with my play so far this week.” Stroud’s round began with a bogey on No. 2 but he rebounded with birdies on Nos. 6, 10, 13 and 14 to finish the day at the top of the standings. He moves on to play Walnut Cove on Saturday. “So far I’ve gotten a pretty good draw,” said Stroud. “I had great weather yesterday at Keowee Vineyards and it was perfect again tomorrow. I’ve got the hard golf course tomorrow, but I feel if you’re playing well you can score well on any course.” Stroud is perhaps best known for a stellar amateur career at Lamar. He was named Southland Conference Player of the Year all four years of college, while notching six victories during his senior year and finishing No. 2 on the Sagarin rankings behind only Wake Forest’s Bill Haas. Weatherly, who also played at the Cliffs Valley course during the second round, hung close to Stroud by hitting 14 of 18 greens in regulation and needing just 26 putts. “Yesterday and today it was just perfect scoring conditions,” said Weatherly. “I don’t feel like I’m hitting it that great but my misses aren’t hurting me too much right now.” Doug LaBelle II (66/CV) is two shots back, while Glen Hnatiuk (67/WC) leads a group of five players at three shots off the pace.
