The greatest portion of land comprising Fox Den Country Club was owned by Dick Huntley, Spencer Smith, George Potter and O.K. Everett. For over 100 years, the area was a popular spot for fox hunters, and the charred remains of hunters' fires were frequently observable.

Having heard numerous stories about the foxes that roamed this territory, it is probably Everett who is responsible for the name "Fox Den." Tennessee's first mule-breeding operation porposered on the site that would later become Fox Den, and one of the two farms was used was later turned into a seed, fertilizer and maintenance equipment storage facility for the golf course.

The course, a Willard Byrd design, opened its first nine holes for play on May 15, 1969.
