The story began in the
Carboniferous Era with the formation of the great Appalachian coal beds. A story of land, rich in natural resources,
formed the basis of the coal mining heritage, which has been utilized to assist a family's commitment to its ancestry, hometown,
the environment and to memorialize Pete Dye's dedication and contributions to the honorable game of golf.
The journey began in 1978 when the LaRosa family and Pete Dye made a commitment to transform 500 acres of abandoned, coal-mined land into a private golf retreat.
Opened in 1995, the Pete Dye Golf Club has been consistantly ranked amont the four "Greatest Golf Courses in the Modern Era." Called the "Shangri-La of golf" by one journalist, the course reflects a true integration of the game and the environment. The course features remnants of coal mining activity, including exposed, strip-mined high walls, a rotary car tipple, coal-laden mine cars, a cart path through a once-deep mine and waterfalls that originate from deep mining activities of days past.
These features, along with the spectacular framework surrounding the golf course, have allowed Pete Dye to design what he refers to as "18 of the most exciting and memorable holes that I have ever built on one course."
In 2007, the Pete Dye Classic will see a change in the course layout that promises to play strategically different than that of years past.
For the $600,000 Nationwide Tour stop, the Pete Dye Golf Club will remain par 72 over 7,308 yards, but the nines are being switched. It's a move the PGA and Nationwide tours, The Golf Channel (for telecast logistical reasons) and even designer Pete Dye endorsed.
