(Savannah, GA) - Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf defending champion and reigning Charles Schwab Cup champion, Jay Haas,
met with local media today in Savannah and officially announced his plans to defend his title in April.
The Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf will celebrate its 30th anniversary this April 16-22 at the Westin Savannah Harbor Golf
Resort & Spa. Last year Haas became the first wire-to-wire winner of the Legends since the tournament became an
official money event in 2002. The Greenville, SC resident fired rounds of 66-68-67 for a 54-hole total of 201
(-15) and a five-shot victory over Peter Jacobsen and Craig Stadler.
Haas, 53, won four times on the Champions Tour in 2006 en route to earning Player of the Year honors and capturing the
season-long Charles Schwab Cup point race. The nine-time PGA TOUR winner also became the first player to win both the
Arnold Palmer Award as the leading money-winner and the Charles Schwab Cup since Hale Irwin in 2002. With over $2.4
million in official earnings in 2006, Haas enjoyed his most lucrative year as a professional since joining the PGA TOUR in
1976.
Haas' victory in Savannah jump-started his year and was the first of three consecutive victories. The three-time
U.S. Ryder Cup team member went on to capture the FedEx Kinko's Classic in Austin, TX the following week, and then collected
his first major championship victory at the Senior PGA Championship at Oak Tree GC in Edmond, OK in May. Haas added
the sixth Champions Tour victory of his career at the Administaff Small Business Classic outside Houston, TX in October.
The former Wake Forest Demon Deacon has made it apparent he is intent on defending his Charles Schwab Cup title and retaining
Player of the Year honors in 2007. Through the first four official Champions Tour events, Haas has posted three top-five
finishes, including a pair of runner-up performances at the Allianz Championship and Outback Steakhouse Pro-Am. He currently
leads the Charles Schwab Cup points race as well as the Champions Tour official money list.
